Understanding companies
How Sandisk Makes Money
A guide to Sandisk’s NAND flash, data-center SSD, edge, and consumer-storage businesses. In this briefing
NAND for data storage
Sandisk supplies NAND flash technology and storage products. NAND retains data without power and is used in SSDs, smartphones, memory cards, and data-center storage.
Sandisk has operated as an independent listed company since its separation from Western Digital. The accounting scope before and after the separation can differ, so be careful when linking historical figures.
NAND and DRAM are different businesses
Both are called memory, but their uses and cycles differ.
| DRAM | NAND | |
|---|---|---|
| When power is cut | Data is lost | Data is retained |
| Main role | Working space | Storage space |
| Typical products | Server and PC memory, HBM | SSDs, memory cards |
| Competitive landscape | Few suppliers | Relatively more suppliers |
NAND has more participants and less product differentiation, so price competition tends to be sharper. That is why NAND can recover later, or fall further, than DRAM within the same memory cycle.
Data center
Data-center SSDs store and rapidly retrieve large volumes of server data. Expanding AI infrastructure can lift demand for storage and retrieval, not only for compute.
Data-center products carry long qualification cycles, and revenue recognition on a given agreement can shift. Separate sample announcements from volume shipments.
AI-related storage demand arises through several paths — holding training data, saving model checkpoints, and feeding data during inference. Converting that demand into enterprise SSD revenue still requires the customer’s infrastructure decisions and qualification process.
Edge and consumer
The edge business can include PC, mobile, and industrial storage. The consumer business responds to demand for memory cards, USB drives, and portable SSDs.
These markets differ in price sensitivity and replacement cycles. Rapid growth in data center can be partly offset by weak consumer demand. Consumer products also carry clear seasonality around year-end shopping, so year-over-year comparison works better than sequential.
Characteristics of the NAND cycle
NAND alternates between oversupply and shortage. Production cuts can improve inventory and pricing, but higher prices then invite expansion again. Read shipments, average selling prices, and inventory together.
Process transitions can lower cost per bit, but early yields and development costs weigh on results first. A technology announcement does not by itself mean margins improve.
What the layer count means
NAND adds capacity by stacking cells vertically. More layers fit more capacity into the same area, lowering cost per bit. Early in a transition, however, yields are low and equipment investment comes first — so adopting a new generation earliest does not immediately create a cost advantage.
Joint manufacturing structures
Shared production facilities are common in the NAND industry. In such arrangements, output allocation, investment sharing, and accounting treatment all affect reported results. Check the footnotes for where equity-method income or joint-venture costs appear in the income statement.
What to check each quarter
- Revenue mix across data center, edge, and consumer
- NAND average selling prices and shipments
- Inventory and the risk of price declines
- Yields and production timing for new NAND generations
- Terms and revenue recognition of long-term agreements
- One-off separation costs and comparability
- Joint-manufacturing income and investment sharing
- Operating cash flow and capital expenditure
Care when comparing peers
Companies in the same NAND business differ in fiscal calendars, product mix, and customer concentration. Micron carries a large DRAM business that reflects the broader memory cycle, and SK hynix holds both DRAM and NAND. The higher a company’s NAND share, the more directly NAND pricing shows up in its results.
For a recently separated company, some historical statements were prepared on the former parent’s basis, so confirm that the basis is consistent before plotting a long-term trend.
Official sources
Sandisk shares some variables with memory peers such as Micron and SK hynix, but product mix, fiscal year, and customer concentration differ. This guide explains business structure and does not recommend buying or selling any security.
